So by connect your saying solder? Just those 4 pins. Connect usr to d2 and mute to d3. Just solder those 4 single pins highlighted in the image? If so an after image sure would have been nice.

Hi Ian,
It does not mean directly soldering those four pins together.
On the ReSpeaker, the D2 and D3 pins are directly connected to the XIAO ESP32S3’s GPIO D2 and D3. According to the tutorial, when you connect the User button to D3, it is essentially connected to the XIAO’s GPIO D3, allowing you to read the button input by reading that GPIO. The Mute button to D2 works the same way.

If you directly solder these four pins together, it would short two GPIO pins to each other, which may cause serious consequences such as GPIO driving conflicts or even chip damage.

Hi, when you say "without this step, the buttons won't work as intended," do you mean the Boot and Reset buttons, or more "optional" buttons like mute, etc. My Device Manager shows the ReSpeaker Lite but there's not DFU indicated (e.g., "ReSpeaker Lite (DFU)" or something similar--is it supposed to show that (I already downloaded and ran the DFU-util -l, but it never returns the device specs like your example.

If you have a Linux device (such as a Raspberry Pi or Ubuntu), please install DFU Utility using sudo apt install dfu-util and then run sudo dfu-util -l; this can help verify that the device is correctly detected in DFU mode and also confirm whether the DFU system path configuration on Windows is set correctly.
