Google does not index page when using @lottiefiles/dotlottie-web

Overview

When including the @lottiefiles/dotlottie-web script on a page (for example via the CDN https://esm.sh/@lottiefiles/dotlottie-web), Google is unable to index the page. The URL shows the status “Crawled – currently not indexed” in Google Search Console. Removing the script restores normal indexability.

This suggests that something in the module code—or the way it is loaded—interferes with Googlebot rendering, possibly due to headers, ESM imports, or DOM manipulation before content is rendered.

Hi @8borane8, I’m not able to reproduce the issue. Do you experience the same problem when using other CDNs like jsDelivr or unpkg ?

Yes, I’m having the same issue with other CDNs like jsDelivr and unpkg. It really seems to be caused by the script itself. I even tried downloading it and loading it locally, and the problem still occurs.

@8borane8 I’m not familiar with Googlebots. If they can’t execute WASM, that might be a blocker for rendering the animation

I’m not sure either, there’s definitely an issue with the library. I can only help with reproducing the bug so it can be investigated.

I'm also having this issue! Just tested a page on our site with and without the lottiefiles and confirmed that Google can't crawl it with them but can crawl it without them.

I may be able to work up a reduced test case but wanted to start with just confirming the issue.

@8borane8 in the mean time you may want to add logic to prevent crawlers from loading the player.

I used this:

Google has a slew of UA names these days. googlebot seems right for the actual crawlers but for the live URL tests (which is what I was using for testing) you have to use google-inspectiontool.

I can confirm this is still an issue. It seems Google Bot crashes when a Lottie animation is present. For me, it didn't matter if it was a .lottie or a .json file. Both crashed the Rich Result Test with a generic error.

For now I'm following @joelisfar idea and only showing the player when an actual browser is hitting the page.
