on Debian Squeeze, the default version of PHPUnit is 3.4.14 which doesn't have the required argument (--printer).
to overcome this .. use pear to install version 3.6.11
pear discover-channel pear.phpunit.de
pear install phpunit/PHPUnit-3.6.11 --alldeps
and you're on your way.
