Although I use QGIS a little, I don't know how easy hard different features are programmtically- is the "transparency" styling an option for this too?
(Note that I don't know what the original asker wanted; I just know that it would be kinda cool to have an ability to hide parts rather than a hard drop from the data)

Absolutely! When I mention discarding, I am referring to discarding from visualization. Making some values transparent is one way to handle this. I need to check other options too to see which one is faster.
