Would you consider adding support for backing up to regular filesystem (e.g. to an external drive), in addition to S3-compatible storage providers, or do you think it's out of scope for this project?

I definitely considered it. Since there are not many options for backing up directly from photos.app it might make sense as an optional backup target. But it's also quite a different scope from the current project. I will think about it since you bring it up.
